Yes Queen's Tips for Working From Home

What you need to know about working from home

Working remotely or working from home has become more and more common in Australia, particularly this year as we navigate COVID restrictions.

If you’re interested in embarking on a working from home lifestyle, or are wondering if this work style would suit you, then keep reading.

What are the benefits of working remotely?

More and more businesses are making the switch to remote working conditions for a few reasons. Not only does it significantly reduce their overheads and operational costs (investing in a Zoom subscription is much cheaper than an office space), but it means that hiring new talent is no longer limited to certain postcodes.

The benefit for you as the employee is a more flexible lifestyle. And who doesn’t want that, right? When you don’t need to be in an office at a specific time, you can go to a yoga class at 1pm or meet up with some friends for a coffee at 4pm. Pending calls and meetings, of course.

What are the disadvantages of working from home?

The type of space required for your work environment will determine any additional out of pocket costs with working remotely or from home.

If all you need is a laptop, a reliable internet connection and some noise cancelling headphones, then your operating costs can be kept quite low. If you’re considering the WFH lifestyle, then chances are you already have all three items (or can duck to your local coffee shop for speedy wifi) and you can start straight away.

If you need to have a home office, for whatever reason, and certain tech or space to meet your requirements, then your out of pocket expenses may have the potential to add up. Will your current internet data cover the extra time online? What about your phone plan? Do you need a printer or particular software to keep things running? They are just a few of the logistics to consider before diving in.

Another consideration is how you will communicate with other team members. Will it be easy and quick to get in contact should an issue arise? Will you be okay with working alone, and not having the comfort of face to fact contact with others? Ultimately, you know you best.

What are the best remote jobs?

Working remotely is not a new trend, with thousands of small businesses, freelancers and employees doing it for years.

Some examples of well paying remote jobs are:

●      Copywriter

●      Graphic designer

●      UI/ UX designer

●      Social media manager

●      Digital marketer

●      Accountant

●      Web developer

How do you get hired for a remote job?

Finding a remote job is now easier than you think. Many job listing websites such as Seek, Indeed and Jora now advertise remote work opportunities. You can also look at www.flexjobs.com and www.freelancer.com.au for freelance job opportunities.

How do I ask my supervisor to work remotely?

Asking your boss if you can work from home can feel like an incredibly daunting ask, but remember that if you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

Your request’s success will depend on a few factors, including the workplace culture and practices, your performance and if your job is actually able to be done remotely. Depending on how long you’ve been with the company will give you a good indication on whether or not they’ll go for it.

And if they reject your WFH request, know that it might not be because of anything you’ve done. Some companies are more progressive than others, and certain managers may not want you out of their sight.

If all else fails, and you’re still not satisfied working in an office environment, there’s always the option to give freelancing a crack or look for another job. Whatever you decide, know that Yes Queen has your back.
